広島市長メッセージ
「第13回広島WPPCフラッグセレモニー」が開催されるにあたり、メッセージをお送りいたします。
ヒロシマは、60年前の被爆体験を原点に、核兵器の廃絶と世界恒久平和の実現を訴え続けてきました。しかし、世界各地で憎しみと暴力、報復の連鎖が断ち切られないまま、今なお地球上には大量の核兵器が存在し、核兵器が使用される可能性さえ高まっています。
このため、広島市は、世界の1,000を超える都市が加盟する平和市長会議を中心に、世界の都市、市民、NGOとともに、2020年までの核兵器廃絶を実現すべく「核兵器廃絶のための緊急行動」を展開しています。
また、被爆の実相と被爆者の「他の誰にも同じ経験をさせてはいけない」というメッセージの意味を、特に若い世代に理解してもらうため、「広島・長崎講座」の普及に力を入れるとともに、大人が子どもたちに被爆体験記を読み語るプロジェクトを展開しています。
こうした中、21世紀が愛と調和、感謝の心にあふれた平和の時代であってほしいという願いを込め、「広島WPPCフラッグセレモニー」が開催されますことは誠に意義深く、関係者の皆様の取組に深く敬意を表します。今年を核兵器廃絶の芽が萌え出る希望の年にするために、今後とも私たちとともに、力を尽し、行動していただくことを心からお願い申し上げます。
最後になりましたが、御参加の皆様の今後ますますの御健勝をお祈り申し上げます。

A message from the Mayor of Hiroshima
August 6, 2005
I send this message in observance of the 13th Hiroshima WPPC Flag Ceremony.
Since its experience in the atomic bombing 60 years ago, Hiroshima has continually appealed for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the creation of eternal world peace. Nonetheless, around the world, the cycle of hatred, violence, and retaliation remains unbroken Massive amounts of nuclear weapons stockpiled continually increase the danger that such a weapon will be used.
For this reason, Hiroshima City and more than 1000 city members of the Mayors for Peace are collaborating with other world cities, individuals, and NGOs on the Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, a plan to abolish such weapons by 2020.
In order to gain the younger generation’s understanding of what happened in the atomic bombing and the meaning of the hibakusha’s desire that “no one else must ever suffer this experience,” we are striving to disseminate Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Courses around the world and encouraging adults to read aloud to children personal accounts of the atomic bombing.
From this perspective, the Hiroshima WPPC Flag Ceremony, held in the hope to bring love, harmony, and thankfulness to the 21st century, is truly significant. I commend all of you involved for your efforts. I hope from my heart that you will continue to join us in sparing no effort to make this a year of hope, the year the buds of nuclear abolition sprout.
